The original ending of the Mass Effect trilogy generated more hype than the First Contact War. The news contains SPOILERS.

Those of you who played the original Mass Effect trilogy will probably remember the controversy surrounding the ending of Mass Effect 3, where the lack of importance of choices in the epic conclusion of the story was a bit of a turn-off for gamers who had experienced a space epic where the story had unfolded based on their choices.

Before almost completely gutting the ending, let’s just say that, what should have been a defining decision, was resolved in a simplistic and unsatisfying way, where the player felt that their journey through the three adventures did not determine the final choice. Unfortunately, this situation angered players so much that some even threatened to kill the developers, and they were forced to work against the clock to expand the denouement with an epilogue that would give players a clearer and more contextualised closure.

While the epilogue improved things, it wasn’t enough to satisfy many fans who, as in this case, went on to develop a mod that definitively solved all the problems they felt the trilogy’s ending still had. If you’re still here and haven’t finished Mass Effect 3, it’s time to run for the hills because SPOILERS are coming.

This new mod, reported by PC Gamer, is actually an adaptation for Mass Effect Legendary Edition of the old “happy ending” mod that already existed in Mass Effect 3. The mod removes the Catalyst, preserves the Citadel along with the mass relays, as well as keeps Shepard alive and her romance if she has one. The creator also shared that he is working to include the Citadel epilogue mod in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, capping off a farewell that he said he would have ready by the end of the year. The success of the remastering of the Mass Effect trilogy has been celebrated by Gary McKay, general manager of BioWare, who has assured that the studio is focused on winning back the trust of the fans.
