MOVIE NEWS – Details of the Super Mario movie recently postponed to April 2023 have been leaked; will Nintendo rework some film elements because of the leaks?

Nintendo has done some test screenings recently, so it’s no wonder leaks have started to emerge. These have been compiled into a Reddit post, and Jeff Grubb, writing for VentureBeat, has confirmed it, having heard similar things from his sources. At the end of the paragraph, we’ll mention that spoilers will be forthcoming from here on out, and reading is recommended at your risk.

The film has a similar visual style to Hotel Transylvania, or other Illumination creations (Despicable Me, Sing), as they are behind the Super Mario film. Mario and Luigi have Brooklyn accents (as in the DIC cartoons seen in the 1980s and the 1993 film). Characters are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, Captain Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, Kamek, and Spike (he’s a rival from Wrecking Crew, in case anyone knows that game from the Famicom). Charles Martin, the voice of Mario, has an extra role: he’ll also be heard as a narrator.

The film begins in “the real world”, with a good chance that it will be less animated than the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario starts as a regular guy but becomes famous after he saves the city (New York, given the Brooklyn accent…) from Donkey Kong (so he’s not doing it as Jumpman, but as Mario). Then he hears something is happening in the sewer and goes to investigate. There, he finds an entire Kong community, and somehow, Mario and Luigi make their way through a pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom.

From there, it’s almost the usual Mario storyline, as Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach, and the two brothers will rescue her. At first, the two brothers will be separated from each other. Mario will run into Captain Toad, and Luigi will run into Yoshi. Then they will run into each other, followed by a big fight with Bowser in a pipe maze with more classic environments and powerups. There will also be songs, one of which will be about plumbing… Many of the gags seen in typical kids’ movies (references, farts, that sort of thing) will not be present.
