A leaker claims a GTA 4 remaster is in the works, along with two other Grand Theft Auto games!
GTA 4 continues to be one of the highest-rated video games of all time, receiving high scores for its characters, story, open-world and more. Despite this, Grand Theft Auto 4 remains mostly stuck on older consoles, and while it is backwards compatible on Xbox, running it on Series X is notoriously problematic. However, it seems that a remastered version of GTA 4 may be forthcoming at some point if recent rumours are to be believed.
Xfire reports that a remaster of Grand Theft Auto 4 is already in the works.
Unfortunately, the report doesn’t give a specific release date for the GTA 4 remaster, saying only that “one is planned, sooner rather than later”. The report also says that the Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster will be bundled with “two other GTA games”, although which ones have yet to be revealed. One obvious possibility does emerge, however.
The two other GTA games mentioned in the report may be expansions of Grand Theft Auto 4, which once enjoyed a separate release from the base game. These expansions were Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned and Grand Theft Auto 4: The Ballad of Gay Tony, both of which were critically acclaimed and added many new features to the GTA 4 experience.
A remaster of Grand Theft Auto 4 is far from the first time it’s been mentioned, and given the game’s massive success, a remastered release seems logical.
Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive has made it clear that it plans to release more remakes and remasters in the coming years, so it would be somewhat surprising if a Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster is not a reality for the time being. However, fans should continue to keep their expectations in check, at least until there is an official announcement from Rockstar Games or Take-Two.
If a GTA 4 remaster ever happens, it will be interesting to see how it is handled. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was panned by fans and critics alike for its shoddy remaster of classic games, so it would be unfortunate if GTA 4 were to suffer a similar fate. However, if the developers can simply improve the graphics of Grand Theft Auto 4 while leaving the gameplay experience largely intact, then success is almost inevitable.
Of course, some would also like to see changes to the GTA 4 experience if the rumoured remaster is completed.
For example, Grand Theft Auto 4’s driving has long been criticised as one of the game’s weak points, so it might be best for Rockstar to change that with a remaster. Something else to keep in mind is that Grand Theft Auto 4 had a multiplayer mode, so it would be interesting to see if this is revived in a remaster or shelved.
