However, that’s not the only thing that has surfaced; there may have been some changes to the release date.
Need For Speed isn’t dead, even though 2017’s Need For Speed: Payback significantly damaged the franchise’s reputation after putting tuning behind loot boxes. 2019’s Need For Speed: Heat wasn’t the real deal either, and the series was taken away from Ghost Games, which was downgraded into a support studio under the name EA Gothenburg. Electronic Arts gave the future of the series back to Criterion, best known for the Burnout series, who created two games under the Need For Speed brand: 2010’s Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and 2012’s Need For Speed: Most Wanted, which is identical in name only to 2005’s game.
Criterion officially got the license back in February 2020. It started working on a new title, but they had to help DICE make Battlefield 2042 (which was also not a very good game), so they had to put their game on hiatus, which had a photorealistic look and was set in a fictional Lake Shore City that looked like Chicago, but with an anime twist.
However, a short video of the work-in-progress game has surfaced on Reddit, showing a car trying to jump over an obstacle, but ending up crashing. Several visual effects confirm the presence of a mix of the photorealistic and anime style. The game is scheduled for release in Q4, between October and December. Still, we should expect it later instead of the November date mentioned so far: according to Jeff Grubb, writing for VentureBeat and GiantBomb, they’ve pushed it back: “They delayed it to December, one month. They’re going to take a few extra weeks before showing it off. Criterion seemed to get sidetracked a little bit when it was working on Battlefield, and that had a ripple effect.”
We want to point out that this is not official yet, but Electronic Arts will soon have to present the new Need For Speed…
