A new report challenges last month’s rumours that Sledgehammer Games is making Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2.
Previous rumours that Sledgehammer Games was making a sequel to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare have been debunked. Last month, Ralph Valve reported the news. At the time, Sledgehammer Games appeared to be making CoD: Advanced Warfare 2. This initial “leak” was immediately met with scepticism by other insiders. They claimed that no such game was in development at Sledgehammer Games.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was released in 2014 and was notable for taking the Call of Duty franchise in a science fiction direction with the use of exo-suits.
The CoD formula’s sci-fi approach proved controversial. However, some people liked the increased mobility of the exo-suits and the way they were incorporated into the Exo Zombies gameplay mode. That said, Sledgehammer moved away from this kind of advanced mobility in later CoD games. And CoD: WW2 and Vanguard took the franchise back to its roots in the WW2 setting.
CoD: Advanced Warfare was somewhat controversial at the time of its release. But there are game fans who would love to see a sequel. Unfortunately, according to a new report from industry insider Tom Henderson, posted on Insider Gaming, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 is not developing at Sledgehammer Games. The report cites unnamed sources and says that Sledgehammer’s next project is in the earliest stages of development and could still change.
The report states that Sledgehammer’s next Call of Duty game may not be released until 2026, as the franchise is reportedly abandoning its annual release schedule and launching a new game every two years.
Since 2005’s Call of Duty 2, a new CoD game has been released yearly. So abandoning the annual release schedule would be a considerable change.
This is not the first time there have been rumours that CoD may abandon the annual release of new games. Activision has denied these rumours. They have stated that there will be no recent Call of Duty game in 2023. Instead, we will get some paid Modern Warfare 2 expansion. Then in 2024, Treyarch’s next game will be released, and in 2026, the Sledgehammer project. Of course, these reports may be inaccurate or based on outdated information. For now, fans should take this with a grain of scepticism.
