Housemarque’s game will require sixteen gigabytes of RAM by default, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
At The Game Awards, Sony has finally confirmed that one of their latest acquisitions, Housemarque’s Returnal, will no longer be PlayStation 5 exclusive, as a PC port is in the works. The trouble is, we’ve known about its existence for months, and we’ve been waiting for Sony Interactive Entertainment to confirm one of its worst-kept secrets.
The Steam page for Returnal has the system requirements, and it’s safe to say that it needs a beefier rig than many of the games released this year.
Minimum system requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10 x64 (v1903)
- Processor: Intel Core i5-6400 (4 cores, 2.7 GHz clock speed) or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X (4 cores, 3.5 GHz clock speed) or better
- Memory: 16 GB RAM
- Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (with 6 GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 580 (with 8 GB VRAM), or better
- Free storage: 60 GB
- SSD recommended
Recommended system requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10 x64 (minimum 1903)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-8700 (6 cores, 3.7 GHz clock speed) or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (8 cores, 3.7 GHz clock speed) or better
- Memory: 32 GB RAM
- Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super (with 8 GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (with 12 GB VRAM) or better
- Free storage: 60 GB
- Not mentioned, but it’s almost a given that an SSD installation is expected
On the one hand, it is already mentioned in the minimum system requirements that it should be installed on an SSD (something we don’t see much of these days), but 16 GB of RAM is not bad either. Still, in the recommended system requirements, it is pushed up to a minimum of a six-core processor and 32 GB of RAM with a relatively modern graphics card. Rough, but surprisingly, the game only requires 60 GB of space…
The PC port, which supports both Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, will have the Tower of Sisyphus endless mode, the Challenge mode, and the co-op mode (which can only be played with other PC players; no cross-play with PlayStation 5). The port is being developed by Housemarque and Climax Studios (Sudeki, Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles; Housemarque was assisted in the port of Resogun and Dead Nation). The PC release date is unknown; it will arrive sometime in early 2023.
