Steam: Record Number of Concurrent Users Playing on the Platform at the Same Time in the First Days of 2023

Steam, Valve’s platform reached an impressive milestone.

In recent years, since the Epic Games Store’s existence in 2018, Steam has had a big rival, which also lures users to the platform with free games on a weekly basis. But this hasn’t hurt Steam, which has seen an upward trend in player numbers. In the first few days of the year, a record number of users were playing or present on Valve’s platform at any time, with more than 10 million people playing games at any time. Steam, which has been in operation since 2003, has not seen this level of traffic before.

According to SteamDB statistics, the record was set on 7 January, with an unprecedented number of people playing and present on Steam. The number of concurrent players was 10 082 055 and 32 186 301 registered users were logged in to the platform at any one time. Previously, the number of concurrent users approached 30 million in March 2022, and the record was surpassed in early October 2022. A year ago, the number of concurrent gamers surpassed 9 million in January 2022, and yesterday, over the weekend, it surpassed 10 million. The 32 million-plus figure includes everyone: those who buy, those who chat and those who play (Source: SteamDB.)

It is interesting to note that the 20 million concurrent users were reached in more than 16 years, by March 2020 (Steam was launched in September 2003). The 30 million, or 10 million more, were reached in just over 2 years. The 10 million mark was reached in June 2015, when Steam took just under 5 years to reach 10 million, or 20 million.
