James Cameron Hopes to Work on the Alita Franchise Again

MOVIE NEWS – James Cameron also has an idea for a sequel to the story. Just make sure he has time to do that.

James Cameron was originally scheduled to make Alita: Battle Angel, but the Avatar sequels consumed so much of his time that he was unable to take on the directing duties. But he stayed on as writer and producer, with Robert Rodriguez taking on the project, and while it was a worthwhile endeavour, it was not so worthwhile that the studio was ready to jump into the sequel.

That doesn’t mean, of course, that the story of Alita: Angel of War (which essentially ended up being the second part) won’t continue. Cameron’s regular producing partner Jon Landau hinted in a recent interview that they’d like to return to that world as well, and now Cameron himself has spoken to Kim Master on The Business podcast about how he’s really hoping to have some time to return to the adaptation of the popular manga, though he might want to keep things rolling in a slightly different format:

“I’d like to work on it more. I think streaming is a great way to tell a longer story. I can say with confidence that I have no shortage of ideas and I like to work with other filmmakers, like I did with Robert Rodriguez on Alita: Angel of War. Unfortunately, it didn’t make enough money to put a smile on everyone’s face, but maybe we will have the opportunity to return to this intellectual property. At least we hope so.”

While Cameron is not a fan of the streaming format, he acknowledges that it may have its merits in some cases. And who knows: maybe it would suit Alita well to make a series rather than a second part as a sequel to the 2019 film, although we would add that the world (and of course the protagonist himself) we see there would not be cheap to put together…
