The big N has confirmed that it will skip this year’s E3, while rumors have resurfaced around Sony that it plans to launch “the next phase of the PlayStation 5” with a big show.
In January, IGN (and so did we) reported that neither Sony Interactive Entertainment, Microsoft, nor Nintendo would be represented at this year’s E3. Sony hasn’t even attended the event in several years, and we’ll get back to them later. Microsoft isn’t spilling the beans on what they’re up to (if we had to guess: there will be an Xbox + Bethesda Showcase around that time), but we haven’t heard much denial or confirmation from Nintendo far.
VentureBeat has a statement from the Japanese company: “We approach our involvement in any event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering various ways to engage with our fans. Since this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into our plans, we have decided not to participate. However, we have been and continue to support the ESA and E3 strongly,” Nintendo wrote.
Meanwhile, Sony held its State of Play this week, and it wasn’t such a big deal (the audience was somewhat disappointed) as there were no significant PlayStation 5 announcements. Sony reportedly held back several prominent reveals to cover them in a more extensive broadcast, kicking off a new phase of the PlayStation 5. Jeff Grubb talked on the Game Mess Decides podcast about how the company hasn’t shown everything it was made to show. It will be time for that soon because there aren’t many games in the works at PlayStation Studios that have been announced.
According to Grubb, Sony would have held this showcase in the fall of 2022. Still, not everyone was ready with what they were working on, so around E3 (before then, to be more precise, so the first half of June), the company will be making the broadcast, which might be where the long-rumored new PlayStation 5 will be confirmed, which won’t have a Blu-ray drive by default, but will be able to have one attached.
