PS Plus Exclusive: What The Hell Does Sony’s PlayStation Store Tag Mean?

Sony’s naming is almost incomprehensible, and perhaps it should be made clear what the company means by this tag.

Several games on PlayStation Store have been given the PS Plus Exclusive tag by Sony. According to a PlayStation Plus Extra subscriber on Reddit, Outer Wilds is also listed as such on Sony’s digital platform. If it is taken to mean that you can ONLY access the game by subscribing to PlayStation Plus (i.e., you can’t buy it without it), then this designation is incorrect. Should we think the game is free with a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscription?

No, because then, for games that are part of the catalog for members, Sony will say, “Included with the Game Catalog in your PlayStation Plus subscription.” According to the Reddit user, the other games included in PlayStation Plus Extra don’t have this weird PS Plus Exclusive badge. Outer Wilds is available on PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium.

Some users believe this exclusivity indicates that the game is unavailable on other subscription services (such as Xbox Game Pass). In contrast, others feel a particular game version is only available to PlayStation Plus subscribers. The latter might be the more realistic option, as there have been many instances where Sony has made a unique or slightly different version of a game available as part of a PS Plus subscription, but as it is a base game, the logic fails here, too.

We tell Sony what to do. Create a pop-up on the PlayStation Store explaining the meaning of PS Plus Exclusive in a precise, understandable way. Then make that available via PC browsers with a tooltip by hovering over the tag, and on console, a button press could bring up that definition. That wouldn’t be difficult, would it?
