PlayStation 5: The Spoiler-Filled Game Progress Feature Is Divisive

A recent feature in the new PlayStation 5 firmware is divisive.

The other day, we talked about how the latest PlayStation 5 firmware update would make it easier to see how many hours you’ve played a particular game, but it doesn’t seem to be accurate (despite Sony’s best efforts, this bug has been on the company’s back for years; we don’t even dare to think why they can’t fix it), but unfortunately, we can add another new feature that might be useful at first sight. Still, on the second, it can make us feel somewhat annoyed because it can make us see things we don’t want to see.

The new feature is called Game Progress. The official patch note says, “Game progress will be displayed for games with a maximum number of story activities.” In other words, if you’re playing a significant game (such as Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), your PlayStation 5 will tell you how far you’ve progressed in the story.

While it sounds convenient, it is divisive: on Reddit, a user first saw Game Progress in action when he and a friend started playing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty together, and the console said they had completed 70% of the campaign up to that point. He suggests that Sony should give players the option to hide this feature. And sarcastically, another poster called the feature useful because you don’t have to search YouTube playthroughs to know where you are in the game.

Here, however, we can turn back to the inaccuracy of the Hours Played feature. What makes us so sure that Game Progress can be more accurate? It may make mistakes here too, and there are fewer games where this feature could appear, but if Sony hasn’t been able to accurately record the time we spend playing a game for years, why should we trust them on this one?
