TECH NEWS – Geoffrey Hinton has been very critical of his former workplace.

We’ve been following the efforts of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, to enter the artificial intelligence market in recent months. Hinton, who is considered by many to be the “godfather of AI,” told The New York Times that he had submitted his resignation in April, and it could indicate serious problems within the company as it seeks to compete against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing AI, and other models. Although departures from senior positions are standard in the tech world, Hinton’s explanation pointed to the dangers of AI if it is not regulated or managed. He has repeatedly said that he is concerned about Google beefing up its AI work to ensure that they are in the first place, but that it has also started raising many ethical questions.

Hinton also talked about the potential for AI to flood society with misinformation, which is difficult to distinguish from actual, accurate data. He believes that AI will also be able to take many people’s jobs so that, for example, voice actors, writers, and artists could face a significant problem with the incredible pace at which technology is developing. Unmanaged, unguided AI could be a massive problem with automated weapons and behavior that learns from the data it used to be trained. We’re certainly not alone in thinking of the Terminator.

Previously, Google sacked an engineer for talking about the company’s language model (LAMDA) because it started to develop feelings. It happened in just a few months, so who knows what’s in store. There really could be something in what Hinton says…
