TECH NEWS – According to the company’s CEO, 7,800 workers could be made redundant by artificial intelligence capable of ever more powerful performance (and perhaps eventually reaching Skynet)…

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna gave an interview to Bloomberg (it’s behind a paywall!). He talked about how the advances in artificial intelligence are causing a freeze on hiring in the human resources department. The fully automated alternatives might be put to work instead. We are talking about 7800 positions, and over time, automated systems will fill those positions. According to Krishna, people who perform human resource-related tasks (moving workers and related services) would be among the first to be replaced.

However, jobs requiring human scrutiny will not be threatened by AI for at least a decade. Positions that require interaction or developing software will remain safe from the technology growing at an incredible pace for even longer. It is no longer science fiction that AI will take over humans’ jobs, as ChatGPT has shown an evolution in a short period that has never been seen before in any field. As a result, the ideas expressed by Krishna will become more common in other companies. Besides IBM, Nvidia, and Intel might be the pioneers in this field, so don’t be surprised if we hear similar things from them later this year.

According to Krishna, despite the cuts in January, 7,000 new jobs were added in the first quarter of 2023, and IBM currently has around 260,000 employees. 7,800 is not many by comparison, but it is still 3%. This number is not as high as the number of firings at Meta, Google, Amazon, or Microsoft. There could be more layoffs at significant tech companies this year, citing the recession.

It’s a matter of time before the layoffs come again. You could even bet on who will be next in line. We think it will be Meta.
