While Naughty Dog has improved the state of the game, there are new bugs on the other side of the scale, so don’t be surprised if a patch for the latest patch for The Last of Us Part I PC port is coming soon.
It was a disaster when the game was released for PC in March. Performance was poor, visuals were poor on mid-range PCs, and there was no shortage of bugs. Naughty Dog effectively took over Iron Galaxy’s work, and they started updating Joel and Ellie’s adventure frequently, so The Last of Us Part I has been in better shape since then…
Below we’ve embedded a new video from Digital Foundry. The team has looked at how the PC version of the game looks. The situation has improved, but it’s not perfect. There are new bugs in The Last of Us Part I. The textures look like they’ve been overhauled, and it looks better on medium graphics settings and requires less VRAM, too. On average, the port requires one and a half gigabytes less, so you won’t have to worry about that if you have 8 GB on your graphics card.
On average, CPU utilization has improved by 10%, but GPU utilization hasn’t changed much. On an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super (i.e., a GPU two generations earlier), it runs between 45-55 FPS at 1440p on high graphics settings. In the background, stuttering associated with streaming data continues to be a problem. When launching the game for the first time, shader compiling has sped up but still takes about 25 minutes instead of 40, but compilation has resulted in new stalls.
So the fact is that the PC port of The Last of Us Part I is still a long way off from what the game did on PlayStation 5. And does Sony want to continue with PC ports after all this (albeit with significant delays – more on that later today)? Oh, dear.
