‘Damsel’ intentionally plays on classic fairy tale themes but starts where they typically end: the protagonist, Elodie in this case, marries the ideal, handsome prince, Henry, and they live happily ever after. However, in this film, this “happily ever after” might end too soon if Elodie doesn’t act quickly, as her seemingly loving husband’s royal family wants her for one reason: to sacrifice her to a fire-breathing monster to settle an ancient debt. However, Brown’s heroine is not one to easily surrender, deciding to defy her fate and escape. Thus, ‘Damsel’ is set to be a real survival action movie, possibly even a light horror, as the titular dragon seems quite menacing in the first trailer.

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) from a screenplay by Dan Mazeau (Fast & Furious 10), the film also stars Nick Robinson, Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Brooke Carter, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. ‘Damsel’ is scheduled to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2024.
