The collection, developed by Digital Eclipse, has been updated with twelve new games, so fans of the oldies should check out what’s new.
The Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Holiday Content Update includes officially released classics, homebrew titles created by amateur developers, and prototypes previously thought lost. This is not just a one-time Holiday Content Update, as the admittedly retro Atari (which purchased the AtariAge site and Digital Eclipse) will be adding more games to the collection in the future, as well as in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes looks.
With this update, the following games have been added to Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration (platform in parentheses) Adventure II (homebrew, Atari 2600), Bowling (Atari 2600), Double Dunk (Atari 2600), Maze Craze (Atari 2600), Miniature Golf (Atari 2600), MotoRodeo (Atari 2600), Aquaventure (prototype, Atari 2600), Save Mary (prototype, Atari 2600), Super Futball (Atari 2600), Return to Haunted House (homebrew, Atari 2600), Circus (Atari 2600), and Warbirds (Atari Lynx). So don’t expect sophisticated Unreal Engine 5 games, as they were made for pretty old hardware (and the Atari Lynx was a handheld competitor to the Game Boy, in case you don’t know the name), so they’re not aimed at a modern audience.
Let’s not forget that this Atari is a far cry from the company that caused a crash in the gaming industry in the United States in 1983 (which should happen again because of abusive monetization, blocking the preservation and archiving of games, the imposition of a permanent Internet connection even in single-player titles… these are all processes that need to be spoken out against, and they are only spreading because most of the public simply does not understand what is wrong with them), so it is identical in name only to one of the patina companies of the 70s and 80s.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Steam, GOG), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
