This technology is a bit gray when it comes to legality, but it could be worth its weight in gold down the road…
Let’s start with the fact that we are talking about a platform that is still very active and therefore cannot support piracy, to which the subject of our news can be applied. However, later, when Nintendo will surely close the eShop dedicated to the Switch, the cartridge in the video embedded below could be the one to run multiple games at the same time, and if they are only digitally released titles, so the preservation of games (a disgrace to the games industry!) will be guaranteed.
“Exciting news for the Nintendo Switch community! We have received an exclusive video from one of our followers of an upcoming product that this person is a beta tester for. Apparently, a “flash cart” type device is coming soon for Nintendo Switch that will support all firmwares, all console types, from all regions. Although it was long overdue, we were a bit skeptical, so we asked for some kind of proof. To our surprise, this person soon sent us a video demonstrating the product in use. And it seems perfectly legit. Anyway, we were told that the product is ready. They will apparently ship the first units in January 2024, so we should hear more very soon. We have been promised more updates soon,” wrote the @AfterDarkX Twitter profile.
Of course, Nintendo is not very supportive of such products. Even in the case of the Nintendo 3DS, although the popular R4 cartridges were released. These have been banned in some regions due to Big N’s copyright claims against the product. In addition, the Japanese company has also taken action against those who sold the R4. By the way, the solution shown on the Switch works either thanks to a Switch hack that allows to run custom system software (the English term CFW, the shorter equivalent of custom firmware, may be something you know), as already alluded to by Team Xecuter a few years ago. The other possibility is that the switch’s kernel is being modified by the code running on the cartridge.
Again, what is being discussed here is not very legal!
