Will Dwayne Johnson’s $200 Million Movie Flop Get A Sequel?!

MOVIE NEWS – Can the 2021 extremely unsuccessful blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson get a sequel? We will try to answer this question…

Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, was released in July 2021. The actress played an intrepid researcher, Lily Houghton. The plot follows him as he leaves London to explore the Amazon jungle in search of a miracle cure.

He hires Frank Wolff (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), a wily captain as dubious as his battered old raft, to navigate the river.

Lily’s determined research uncovers an ancient tree whose extraordinary healing powers could change the future of medicine. As a result, he embarks on an epic quest.

The unlikely pair face countless dangers—not to mention supernatural forces—that lurk beneath the lush splendour of the rainforest. As the secrets of the lost tree are gradually revealed, the stakes become even higher for Lily and Frank. Not only their fate but also that of all humanity is at stake.

Based on the famous attraction at the Disney parks, Jungle Cruise was made on a whopping $200 million budget. Although the premiere was successful, its ratings later began to drop sharply. The film was a commercial failure. It brought only 220 million at the box office. Its simultaneous release on Disney+ didn’t help matters, either.

This did not prevent the studio from announcing plans for a sequel in August 2021 – perhaps a little too early.

To this day, IMDb reports that Jungle Cruise 2 is still in development, with director Jaume Collet-Serra at the helm, just like the 1st opus.

However, there has been no news about the project for over two years. Also, after another commercial failure with Black Adam (also directed by Collet-Serra), Dwayne Johnson seems to be choosing his films better in Hollywood. To get back on his feet in terms of blockbusters, The Rock recently returned to the Fast and Furious franchise. He also got a solo spin-off for his character, Luke Hobbs.

Hobbs will be very busy. It seems that Jungle Cruise 2 is no longer a priority for him or Disney. So, it is unlikely that the sequel will see the light of day any time soon. It might even stay in Mickey’s desk drawer for a very long time without ever appearing…
