The series revolves around family relationships, the challenges of long marriages, and the quest for self-actualization, gradually peeling back the idealized image of the working mother and wife.
David Heyman, another executive producer of the series, called Moriarty’s novel the author’s best work, expressing pride in being part of its screen adaptation. He emphasized the story’s diverse and complex characters, and the way family members’ secrets slowly come to light. According to Heyman, the series is sometimes funny, other times touching, and always captivating, brought to life by the outstanding performances of the cast, including Annette Bening and Sam Neill, realistically portraying the novel’s world.
