Dragon Age Creator Doesn’t Want To Overhype His New Game!

Marc Laidlaw, who has been guiding the future of the Dragon Age franchise at BioWare for over a decade, recently announced the next game that his new studio has been working on for a few years.

We recently reported on Eternal Strands, which Yellow Brick Games has been working on since 2020. The studio has been quietly working on the project, and PCGamer caught up with Laidlaw at the Game Developers Conference before the game was announced, and while he didn’t talk specifically about the game at the time, he did talk about his approach to development, his positive remarks about Larian Studios and Supergiant Games (Baldur’s Gate 3, Hades), and a very sympathetic attitude…

“With Yellow Brick, my personal goals have not been to redefine RPGs or anything like that, in part because I wouldn’t say what we’re doing is an RPG in the classic sense. I just really don’t want to overhype anything. I just want to be like: “Look, it’s a video game, and I hope you really enjoy it, because I made it, and a group of people made it with me, and we just hope you enjoy it”.

I think Baldur’s Gate 3 is a result of Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 and all the other Divinity games before that, and realizing that most studios do not find magic right away. I find myself very excited because I see teams that have managed to stick together really digging in and elevating what they were already working on. The biggest thing for me is that at the end of the day, all the people working on it want to keep working on it. That would be my favorite kind of success, because it means that we’re able to say: Cool, what have we learned now that we all really know each other? What have we got?” said Laidlaw.

Laidlaw’s mentality is a clear reflection of his cautious approach, not announcing the game in 2021 (or a little later), but only when he was confident to take it to the public.
