Anna Sawai, Star Of The Shogun, Missed A Major DCEU Role For This Banal Reason?!

MOVIE NEWS – Anna Sawai talked about how she couldn’t audition for David Ayer’s DCEU blockbuster because of her previous career, no matter how much she wanted to…

Shogun star Anna Sawai recently revealed the bizarre reason she was forced to skip an audition for David Ayer’s 2016 DCEU film Suicide Squad. The Japanese/New Zealand actress has become one of Hollywood’s rising stars recently. He has played significant roles in productions such as Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Pachinko, Giri/Haji, F9, and most recently FX’s epic historical drama series The Shogun. However, Sawai revealed that he had the opportunity to launch his blockbuster career much earlier, but was forced to turn it down.

Speaking to THR, Anna Sawai reflected on how, as the former leader of the J-Pop group FAKY, the company that oversees the group, banned the actress from auditioning for Suicide Squad.

“I was like, ‘This is my chance!’ And then I go to my manager and he’s like, ‘You can’t audition.’ other members of FAKY] are not going to have anything to do.”

Sawai said he tried to convince his bosses that the role would be beneficial for the group. It could boost their public image. However, he was unable to convince them in the end.

“It felt like they were really tying me down. And, because of my contract, I couldn’t leave until the time that I actually left [in 2018].”

Sawai joined the group in 2013 as one of the founding members, having been an intern at Avex (a large Japanese entertainment company) boot camp since 2006.

Sawai described the murderous process as follows: ” You are either lucky and join a group, or debut as a solo singer, or you’re gone.” During the training program, Anna Sawai was given time off to audition. Finally, he starred in the 2009 action film Ninja Assassin. Sawai said it was the role that made him fall in love with acting.

The role of Katana in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was finally given to Karen Fukahara. She is best known to superhero fans these days as Kimiko from Prime Video’s The Boys. Despite losing the chance to audition, Sawai had nothing but praise for Fukuhara:

“She did an amazing job, and I respect her so much, and I love her. But also, I would have loved to audition for it.”
