Carrie-Anne Moss Tells What She Got Out Of The Matrix When She Was Making Star Wars: The Acolyte!

MOVIE NEWS – Carrie-Anne Moss has fallen from the digital world of the Matrix into the mystical forces of Star Wars: The Acolyte.

Carrie-Anne Moss recently shared her challenges playing a Jedi in Star Wars: The Acolyte. This new chapter takes place nearly a century before the events of The Phantom Menace. The Acolyte debuts on Disney+ next month.

In a recent interview with Empire, Moss talked about her transition from the cyber battlefield of the Matrix to the mystical level of the Force.

Despite her extensive experience in action films and science fiction, playing a Jedi required a unique approach. Especially since she solved most of the new role on her own. All of this is different from the action scenes in her previous films with her co-stars.

“Yeah, I think all of my history of learning to fight and- This was very different though, because I was by myself. I had always done [The Matrix] with my co-stars, and there’s a certain energy.”

Moss said that this solitary journey allowed her to discover the strength and discipline of character. These are the essential characteristics of all Jedi. The intensity of her preparation was both a physical and emotional test. She strove to make a Jedi’s movements appear controlled, almost effortless, while internally managing the complexity of her emotions and expressions.

“[On The Acolyte] I was on my own, with my team, which was great because I got to ignite and access a part of myself. I was like, ‘I want to do everything.’ I loved it more than I can remember doing something in a long time. I can learn this, and I can find that containment.”

Moss humorously recounted conversations with showrunner Leslye Headland about maintaining a stoic demeanour during fight scenes. All of this is in stark contrast to the expressive fighting style of the Matrix era.

“With fighting, it’s very hard for me not to make faces – to constantly bring it back in, where it’s almost effortless. It looks effortless, and yet it’s not. [laughs] That was fun to play with. I told [showrunner Leslye Headland], ‘I don’t want to be making a lot of faces. I want it to be right.'”

Carrie-Anne Moss recounted her struggles with the Jedi mantle in Star Wars: The Acolyte

Moss shared the challenges and physical demands of the role. She pointed to the double-edged sword of her Jedi outfit. The actress acknowledged the limitations imposed by her costume.

“It was tricky. My physical blocks actually came from the costume. It’s really important to practice in the costumes. They’re heavy. There was a boning in the bodice – actually the costume injured me the most, because I didn’t have any movement in a certain area of my back, in my shoulders.'”

This physical limitation required significant recovery efforts from Moss.

The immobility of critical areas affected the ability to perform the complex combat scenes expected of a Jedi.

Moss highlighted the transformation that occurs the moment she is called into action on set. It was only later, back in his hotel room, that the full cost of her efforts became apparent: the fatigue and pain she accumulated throughout the day.
