A TV/Film Adaptation of Elden Ring? The Director is Not Ruling it out!

MOVIE NEWS – Hidetaka Miyazaki says that FromSoftware’s highly successful and best-selling game (over 25 million copies sold) could become transmedia, so we could see it in other formats besides games.

Elden Ring was the best game of 2022, and recently received the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, which has brought it back into the game’s popularity, and as usual for the Japanese studio, this time it’s not easy for the player, because we’ve gotten used to FromSoftware’s action RPGs not being easy to play through. Miyazaki gave a video interview to The Guardian, and they talked a lot about The Elden Ring and Shadow of the Earth Tree. There was also a question about whether it could be adapted for another medium. It turns out that there is no such thing in the pipeline at the moment, but Miyazaki did reveal that there is active interest in a TV series or movie adaptation.

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, but I don’t think I or FromSoftware have the knowledge or ability to produce something in another medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come in. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on what we’re trying to achieve, but there’s certainly interest,” Miyazaki said. So he’d be inclined to do it if it were done by a worthy party. Most recently, Bluepoint Games and the now-defunct Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio worked on Demon’s Souls, which was one of the launch titles for PlayStation 5.

So in this case, it’s not a question of money and will, it’s a question of trust. We’ve seen good adaptations (Sonic, for example), but we’ve also seen examples of the opposite (the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, for example). With Miyazaki overseeing the process in close collaboration, the reins may not fall from his hands, but someone will have to earn From Software’s respect.

That won’t be easy.
