MOVIE NEWS – On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the National Geographic channel, in cooperation with the Warsaw Uprising Museum, has produced three short films, which viewers can see for the first time on August 1, 2024. Archival sources and the knowledge of historians allowed the events of 80 years ago to be presented on the screen in an innovative way.Many interesting things are now coming to light for the first time.

In September 1939, Hitler’s German troops in alliance with the Soviets overran Poland and divided it among themselves. Hungary entered the war on the side of the Germans in 1941. In the meantime, the Poles created the Home Army and an émigré government against the Germans and Russians. In July 1944, they decided to launch the Warsaw Uprising in order to recapture their capital before it was completely under the control of the Red Army.

Although the Hungarians took part in the war on the side of the Germans, they did not become enemies of the Poles due to the friendship between the two countries, in fact, they specifically refrained from taking part in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising and refused German orders to do so.^[1] However, without the effective help of the Western Allies, the Poles could not defeat the troops occupying them, so the soldiers of the Home Army fought heroically for more than two months before surrendering in October 1944. ^[2]

Film series on the occasion of the 80th anniversary

The three short films of the Warsaw Uprising series work on the subject from different perspectives in order to portray the historical event in a sufficiently authentic way, while at the same time passing the history on to new generations in an innovative way. The aim of the creators was to present the uprising in an educational, captivating and emotional way. All animations have been enriched with realistic sound effects.The first episode captures the moment of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the second is about the women who participated in it, and the third is about the tells the story of foreigners. The series is particularly interesting for us because the centuries-old friendship between the two countries was strengthened during the Warsaw Uprising, especially due to the fact that the Hungarians tended to help the Poles during the uprising.

The archive photos combined with action-packed animations and the films compiled from the memories of the participants who are still alive today completely captivate the viewer and transport them to Warsaw during the 1944 uprising in a unique way.“Thanks to the innovative video collage technique, appropriate music and captivating narration, we managed to create unique short films that pay a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the participants of the Warsaw Uprising” – said Marta Szafrańska, The Walt Disney Company CEE Director of Corporate Communications, Social Responsibility.”The three films were shown not only in Poland, but also in the rest of the Central and Eastern European region, such as Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North It will also be shown in Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. Thus, National Geographic, in accordance with its mission, introduces the story to a wide audience,” he adds.

The short films will be available for viewing on the National Geographic channel from August 1, 2024. The short films were made together with the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
