Sony’s emulation of the previous console generation’s hardware is progressing at an almost unstoppable pace, and it really could only be a matter of months before most major titles at least make it to ShadPS4.
We’ve reported on the fate of ShadPS4 on several occasions. Fortunately, we only have positive news to report, as it doesn’t appear that Sony has taken any action against the developer so far. If they were making a Nintendo Switch emulator, it would have been the same as the Yuzu (and 3DS Citra) team having to pay huge damages out of court, although that didn’t stop them from working on the hybrid platform emulator that was released over seven years ago. Good thing, because preserving games is important.
In the video embedded below, you can see that Red Dead Redemption Remastered (we’d prefer to put three quotation marks around the word remastered, because it’s anything but, we’d rather call it a re-release…) is now coming to ShadPS4. Sure, Rockstar’s western adventure isn’t playable yet, but two weeks ago it only got as far as booting, progress is unstoppable. Other titles show up in the video, though.
One Piece Unlimited World Red, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Steamworld Dig 2 and Persona 5 Royal are also featured in the video, and of course the performance varies from title to title, which is understandable since the emulator is still very young and therefore not yet sophisticated. Nevertheless, it has managed to capture the public’s attention, even though there are other PlayStation 4 emulators out there. Ultimately, the goal is to be able to play Bloodborne on a PC, but emulated rather than native. We’ve been pestering FromSoftware and Sony to no avail: they won’t do anything.
ShadPS4 is also able to develop so quickly because the processor architecture in the console is based on the same x86-64 architecture found in a PC. There’s no Cell, which was used in the PlayStation 3, so it’s not as complex a task to develop an emulator for the PlayStation 4.
