Sony and their „genial” trademark move – It backfired!

Especially since the existence of the Google-YouTube cooperation, it has become a widely acknowledged hobby to record games while playing them and also provide commentary over the game’s audio. (Even some of our editors do it regularly!) The terminology „Let’s Play” was coined for a decade ago or so by the SomethingAwful forums. Now, Sony tried to pull something absolutely ridiculous that we cannot even comprehend.

Sony Computer Entertainment America tried to trademark the term Let’s Play, which – according to their description – consists of „electronic transmission and streaming of video games via global and local computer networks; streaming of audio, visual, and audiovisual material via global and local computer networks.” So would they just claim everything regardless of the platform the game is played on? They didn’t mention any platform in their description.

The internet responded in chorus saying that it’s completely retarded on Sony‘s part. We also believe that it’s a dumb, stupid move as Sony has no rights to trademark the Let’s Play term. What if we play a PC game that’s only available on the PC? Would they have the rights to claim that video? No. Congratulations, Sony.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
