LEGO: Marvel’s Avengers – Punisher!

REVIEW – As one of the biggest fans of LEGO games, I can safely attest to the fact, that LEGO: Marvel’s Avengers is one of the most divisive entries of the series. There were worse (LEGO: Jurassic World), and interesting ones (Dimensions), and better ones (Marvel’s Super Heroes). However even the worst one Aka: Jurassic World the developers did not have as many pitfalls as in Marvel’s Avengers.

Of course, the game is not horrible, and in fact, it is pretty enjoyable, but I would never have thought certain issues would arise that were never seen in a LEGO game. For example, the combat system is bad, and the gameplay is buggy, plus the lack of Co-Op is just weird. While LEGO video games were usually above the usual muck, here it totally sunk into mediocrity

Vengence

The story follows the Avengers movies. As TT Games usually does they allow us to replay the entire movie from scene by scene. Of course this time with much more freedom so that we can collect shiny coins, and lots of enemies to ass kick throughout the levels. The scenes are the same but with a more humorous twist on the action, which usually carried the series, but here there are issues with even this.

The funny scenes are most of the times are not that funny, and the reason for this is because the audio is as if the movie was recorded from a TV and then burned to the video game. If they only copied the effects part from the movie, then it would be okay, but the dialogue was also copied.

The playable characters’ (that we get a bunch) movements, and, in fact, TT Games added a lot of special attacks for our liking. There is only one gigantic problem that blinded us while playing. Their new combat system tells us which buttons to press and in a short QTE kills every enemy. So much for smashing buttons that were in the previous games! Nope, just press a button and see the hammer throw, and the enemy is already dead. This system is monotonous, and boring after awhile.

Speaking of monotonous, and annoying, one of the most fun parts of Super Heroes the puzzles also became bad. A lot of people remember these sections as a fun co-op section, where we put together, pulled apart, rotated items. Of course, there are such things here also, but they prove to be entirely pointless, as one person can complete these, and solve the puzzles. So there is no need to co-op these sections sadly.

„Cause if we can’t protect the Earth you can be damn well sure we’ll Avenge it.”

The bad combat system, the boring jokes from the movie, and the samey LEGO gameplay. What can save this LEGO game from total failure? Not a lot that is for sure! However, the sandbox world does help the game for our Superhero friends. The city from LEGO: Marvel’s Superheroes’ is back and it is much more detailed and even bigger. Besides the Big City we get two off-site locations, one is Barton farm and Asgard. We can complete missions here, and play mini-games, so that we can earn new characters, and vehicles.

We can unlock one hundred new characters that have never been included in LEGO ever before in these games. The only problem is that we do not need to use these additional characters to complete the game, plus the characters that the game offers as extra are extremely bland.

If a few of the characters had a fun mini-quest than it would have been worth it to have Ms. Marvel or Devil Dinosaur to be in the game. However without such fun activities, the additions are lame and at times shameful.

You can love, and enjoy it as there are a lot of characters from the comic books, which some are not even in any of the movies. The problem is though that LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is a second rate product from TT Games, that almost is bad as Jurassic World, and does not even reach LEGO Marvel’s Superheroes.

Pro:

+ LEGO Avengers!
+ Large and detailed sandbox level
+ Characters adapted from the comic book

Against:

– Co-op is pointless a lot of time

– Dumbed down combat system

OKAY

While the new city is fun and running, flying, exploring it is adventurous, TT Games’ new LEGO game does not provide us with anything new, and provides not much good. Unfortunately, it seems that they screwed over our favorite heroes.
