Ubisoft’s game had good momentum at launch, but the question is whether it can sustain it in the long run…
Mat Piscatella, managing director and gaming industry analyst at Circana (formerly NPD Group), has released the latest monthly sales figures for video games in the US for March, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows topping the list. This makes it the best-selling game last month, which is no big surprise as Piscatella previously reported that the French publisher’s game dominated the weekly sales charts for the first three weeks. It’s also impressive that it’s already the second bestselling game of 2025 so far, but Capcom’s masterpiece Monster Hunter Wilds is ahead of it. Behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows is MLB The Show 25, but since Americans love baseball, it’s no wonder that Sony’s truly multiplatform game has moved into second place (it’s coming to Xbox as well as PC…). This game is currently in fourth place in the 2025 top ten. Hazelight’s latest game, Split-Fiction, came in at number five in March and just made the top 10 for the year with its tenth place…
In terms of player engagement and the most played game of the month, the list is less diverse, with Fortnite topping the list for monthly active users on consoles. The rest of the list is essentially unchanged, with the usual titles appearing (Marvel Rivals, Minecraft, Roblox, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto V) and mostly staying in the same place, with a difference of one or two places from February. In terms of hardware sales, PlayStation 5 came out on top, although overall hardware sales were down 25% and PS5 sales were down 26% compared to March last year. The new Midnight Black DualSense was the top selling accessory.
All in all, it’s a very strong start for Assassin’s Creed Shadows… the question is how long it will last.
