What Is Angela Merkel’s Relation To Gamescom?

The question is not poetic before you answer.

This year will have Gamescom as usual, but the organizers are throwing in a twist: in 2017, Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel is going to open the event on August 22 in Cologne. Nothing similar has happened yet in the history of Gamescom. With her appearance, the organizer wants to underline how important the gaming industry is in Germany, which needs to be stronger than before to become one of the top countries in the digitalised economy.

In 2016, 345,000 visitors have attended Gamescom from 97 countries total, and 54 countries’ 877 companies have exhibited their products for the attendees. This year, they are likely getting better performance than a year ago – E3 has pulled it off as well (although it was because it was public).

Anikó, our news editor and communication manager, is more interested in the business side of the gaming industry. She worked at banks, and she has a vast knowledge of business life. Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
