A Chinese Company Expands: Tencent Invests Into Another Developer

You don’t hear much about Tencent itself, but this company has a large stake in Epic Games (Unreal Engine!) as well as Riot Games (League of Legends!).

According to Eurogamer, Tencent has bought 9% of the stakes (3.37 million shares) of Frontier Developments for 17.7 million GBP. The developers of Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster will use this cash to increase their reserves, as well as invest for future growth.

James Mitchell, chief strategy officer of Tencent, explains contacting Frontier due to them having a highly scalable game engine technology, decades of history in development, as well as increasingly sophisticated live operations, plus they also believe their space exploration and theme park games would gain interest in the Chinese market, too.

The Chinese don’t stop.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
