Monster Hunter World’s Performance Is… Not Perfect [VIDEO]

How acceptable does Capcom‘s new successful game run on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (as well as their stronger versions)?

DigitalFoundry, as always, has put together a detailed analysis of the PlayStation 4/Xbox One/PlayStation 4 Pro/Xbox One X performance, and there are quite a few details. Let’s start with the resolution: 1080p vs. 864p with the PlayStation 4 in the lead. Both consoles go for 30 frames per second but neither can keep it constantly (the PS4 is capable of going above 30 while the Xbox One can’t), and Sony wins this comparison, too: an average of 26-30 FPS is seen versus Microsoft’s console’s 24-26.

The PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X has a different situation, as both consoles offer three options (resolution, graphics, and performance modes). The resolution has the PlayStation 4 Pro running the game on 1800p with checkerboard scaling, while the Xbox One X has a native 1720p with sharper visuals.

The performance/graphics modes both limit the resolution to 1080p. The PlayStation 4 Pro doesn’t offer a performance boost after the resolution mode, while the Xbox One X sees the graphics mode run the game at 42 FPS – about the same as the PS4 Pro’s performance mode. The performance mode has the PlayStation 4 Pro hover around 40 frames per second, and the Xbox One X runs in the upper forties, plus it can sometimes go 60 FPS (but not during combat)! For some unexplainable reason, the PlayStation 4 Pro gives more detail for the objects in the far distance than the Xbox One X. Unfortunately, there’s no way to limit the frame rate, which could provide a stable experience at 30 FPS.

Regarding sales, in Japan (where Monster Hunter World only launched on PlayStation 4), the initial shipments’ 92% (!!!) was sold, with a 1,245,169 launch week sales number just in Japan! It easily defeats the previous records (Monster Hunter Tri, Wii, 520 thousand, Monster Hunter XX, 3DS, 848 thousand launch week copies sold). As expected, Capcom’s game also pushed the PlayStation 4’s sales as well to a 267% (!!!) week-on-week increase.

The game is good, and it’s quite popular – the long-term sales are likely going to be decent.
