Sports Car GT – Autorun – in a new perspective [RETRO-1999]

RETRO – Those who hear the name of Electronic Arts for a car racing game will immediately pair it with the Need for Speed series. Who knows maybe they did not want to be labeled as the Need for Speed making company. In anyways their latest game we do not take on the streets, or to surreal worlds, but to real world race tracks, and the game’s title is much simpler. Though we will still need the speed for this title.

 

Loading the game we will be greeted by an intro that seems pretty lackluster especially after the spectacular intro of Need For Speed 3, but do not judge this game from the intro alone.

As the player wishes

The game contains the usual features regarding races ( tutorial, quick race, championship, etc. ), however, what is more complex are the graphics options. There are three resolutions available to us, and a lot of special effects. Those who have a power rig can simply turn everything on at 640×480, as the game’s engine is rather well optimized.

At the 200km/h, you will not look right or left

Although we will race in stadiums that have thousands of people, we will not see cheering crowds. Same goes for the stadiums; they are rather bleak and boring regarding looks.
However the speed of the races are top notch: we’ll have a fun time racing in this game, and we will feel the high speeds feel as if we were in the car and driving in real life. Which is not always a feature present in racing games?

I told you to hit the breaks!

Sports Car GT looks easier to control up until we realize that there is a wall coming up. The driving was made entirely realistic, and we keep mentioning the developers hot-headed every time we mess up during the race.

Our enemies will try always to get in front of us; a bad move is enough, and we’ll end up at last place. There is a lot of frustration to be had thanks to the game, but for a professional who is used to Toca 2 will be a sanatorium

Opinion

The game’s bleak and lacking regarding atmosphere / visuals: there is nothing that would raise it above the usual racing games. Even though the engine is well done ( no lag even with the number of vehicles on track), the other parts of the game are so annoying that you’ll end up yawning which at 250 km/h can be fatal.
