Breakaway: Amazon Cancels Its First Unique Game! [VIDEO]

After the 2016 announcement, Breakaway is already getting shafted…

Amazon Game Studios announced this game at 2016’s Twitchcon (remember: Amazon owns Twitch!). It would have been a 4v4, „mythological sports brawler” on PC, and it ran on a fork of the CryEngine called Lumberyard. On Reddit, the game was canceled with the following message:

„Hey everyone. We wanted to update you on the development of Breakaway. Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway’s core gameplay. While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul-searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development.

We remain exceptionally proud of the team’s work and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community. We will reach out to this channel as soon as we have news to share regarding our new projects, and if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes that leads us back to Breakaway, you’ll be the first to know.”

Let’s have a look at the game, as it was already removed from Amazon Game Studios‘ page… after the jump, we continue.

Jump! So, there were two other games announced back then, and there’s not a lot of information regarding either of these (which is weird from a financially well-regarded company…): Crucible is a third-person, last man standing game where „a mix of combat skill, strategic planning, and social finesse to survive” is required, plus „trust and betrayal” would also play a significant role. New World would be an open-ended MMO sandbox game in a „living and cursed world.”

Breakaway broke away. From us.
