Electronic Arts Could Be Entering The Battle Royale Fad, Too!

And they wouldn’t do it with the Battlefield V game mode!

Battle Royale is the current fad – even Activision Blizzard has gone down its road by replacing Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII’s story mode with a BR game mode called Blackout. Although Electronic Arts is making DICE do a battle royale mode for Battlefield V (although it will arrive at a later date), the publisher is considering a separate game, too.

GamesIndustry reports that Electronic Arts‘ chief financial officer, Blake Jörgensen, said the following on a financial earnings call: „We’re interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game that might be in a shooter genre or another genre, but I don’t think that’s how we’re looking at the Battlefield stuff right now.” In other words, they do not want to split the Battlefield V’s game mode into a standalone game. Instead, they will likely make a new game in the „following months, years.” We aren’t surprised.

Electronic Arts is progressing elsewhere, too. Andrew Wilson, the CEO, says the following: „In addition to amazing games coming this year like Battlefield V, Anthem, our latest EA Sports titles and Command and Conquer Rivals, we have new IP in development for all platforms. Across EA worldwide studios, Respawn is developing Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order for FY 20 (between April 2019 and March 2020), another with another new project in the pipeline. Motive is developing new IP, our mobile studios are working on several new titles, and we have more projects underway. At the foundation of every experience will be choice, fairness, value, and fun, that ensure we’re delivering for our broad and diverse player audience.”

Wilson also talked about subscriptions, saying that they „will bring more choice, reduced friction, and value in a world of ever-increasing content.” He also believes machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cloud gaming will be implemented into games, changing the industry as well.

When will Ubisoft join the party? Take-Two previously firmly went against battle royale
