Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco released console gameplay footage of their upcoming game, revealing some surprising results.
This open-world, dark fantasy action RPG makes no secret about how it will run on consoles, just as Cyberpunk 2077 did before its December 2020 release. Rebel Wolves, made up of former CD Projekt RED members, has learned from past mistakes, which is always good to see. Much the same can be said about how transparent the Polish team is regarding the game’s console performance, though not entirely.
On the PlayStation 5 Pro, both Quality and Balanced graphics modes offer dynamic 4K resolution, though the frame rate differs. Quality mode targets 30 FPS, while Balanced mode targets 40 FPS. We haven’t seen any footage from Balanced mode yet. Even the most powerful console currently available won’t be able to reach 60 FPS. You might need a powerful PC to achieve stable performance with beautiful visuals. The situation is the same on the base PlayStation 5: Quality mode targets dynamic 4K at 30 FPS, and Balanced mode targets dynamic 4K at 40 FPS. However, resolution scaling is much more aggressive here. The Xbox Series X offers these two options as well (Quality: dynamic 4K, 30 FPS target; Balanced: dynamic 4K, 40 FPS target), and the differences appear minimal.
They didn’t mention the Xbox Series S, which is concerning because they should have addressed all four consoles. If they’re being this secretive, especially close to the launch, the game will likely look poor, most likely at a low resolution, or the frame rate will drop to slideshow levels. However, it’s also true that this is the weakest of the 2020 consoles.
The Blood of Dawnwalker will be released on September 3 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
