Rainbow Six: Siege Receives Backlash Over Censorship!

Ubisoft has modified the game worldwide to appeal to Chinese censors – the community did not take it kindly.

The game’s maps and user interface got changed, which is why the game got over fifteen hundred negative ratings on Steam. One example from Cthonic: „A well-known game company to bow his head to a fascist government is disgraceful. Why should every player in the world obey a bully? You’re sending a message that bullying works. Restricting liberty works.”

The game’s subreddit is full of this subject – the fact that Ubisoft modified anything in the game to have the game legally launch in China (where there are hundreds of millions of potential players, thus a significant market), is offensive to them. „By adhering to Chinese censorship, they are cooperating with a dictatorship. Like what the f__k Ubisoft, you can’t do this sh_t! This against what the West stands for!”, a comment from Zarvoth says. A comment with over 28 thousand upvotes by Qwikskopua69: „If you are changing the game to fit a fascist countries’ [sic] standards then you might as well remove [Tom Clancy’s] name because he is rolling in his grave right now. This game resembles nothing of that what he wrote.” A Royal Air Force military police veteran claims he is stopping playing Siege, as „Ubisoft has surrendered to China” (and that is a stylish way to describe it from a veteran), while another commenter has broken the game’s disc in protest.

A few images follow about the changes – mostly the sex, drugs, gambling-related things are getting either modified or wiped from Rainbow Six: Siege altogether:

The reason behind the „unification” follows: „By maintaining a single build, we can reduce the duplication of work on the development side.” The reason why the community flipped out is simple – via a Reddit post, Ubisoft has confirmed that while there will be a regional version in China, the game will be affected internationally via the changes above.

Other people don’t mind the changes – Pengu, a member of Siege’s top-rated G2 eSports team, wrote on Twitter: „I truly do not see people’s issue with this, it does not affect you in ANY WAY POSSIBLE. Happy about these changes, allowing for more culture diversity as well as exposing the game to more people (China) and facing the fact that its EASIER to run one game client than two, good job, Ubi.” Fabian, the captain of the G2 team, agrees: „You lose something you never knew you had before aka slot machines on the wall or some preset blood on a wall in Skyscraper, no biggie.” Parker „Interro” Mackay, Siege Pro League’s commentator, also chimed in: „„I can’t support a company that is in bed with a Chinese dictatorship. Ubisoft are scumbags!! *Sent from my iPhone X*” These are harmless aesthetic changes that allow hundreds of millions to now access the game.” His colleague, Michael „Kixstar” Stockley, thinks similarly: „Guess I’ll weigh in on the aesthetic change: Gameplay not changing? Don’t care.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the player count of Rainbow Six: Siege will change. Ubisoft will probably say it’s growing without any exact details…
