[E3 2019] Elden Ring: The Game George R. R. Martin Worked On! [VIDEO]

The rumours were not lying: George R. R. Martin, whose work was used to create the Game of Thrones HBO series, has indeed worked together with FromSoftware on a game!

The announcement happened by Bandai Namco at Microsoft’s E3 conference, confirming that FromSoftware‘s next big project is going to be Elden Ring, which is a „fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series [do they hate Demon’s Souls that much? they should have written Souls series there – the editor]; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware’s largest game to-date,” according to Bandai Namco’s press release.

„Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the Elden Ring mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of Elden Ring will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a From Software title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it,” Hidetaka Miyazaki said. „Building the world of Elden Ring with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what Elden Ring has in store for them,” George R.R. Martin added.

On Xbox Wire, we also read that the development was indeed started shortly after Dark Souls 3’s DLC was done, so about three years ago. Initially, the idea was to work on a more classic fantasy title, but „we wanted to create a new dark fantasy action RPG full of things that we weren’t able to do in the Dark Souls series. We are not shying away from the fun of responsive melee-based combat, and these elements will be present as well. The importance we place on the joy the player experiences through overcoming challenges will be the same as it is in our other titles. I believe it will prove to be a very satisfying experience,” according to Miyazaki. There will be character customization in this game, too, not to mention „a wide variety of weapons, magic, and ways to engage enemies, that make it possible to provide users with a style of gameplay and strategy that suits them.”

„I personally see [George R. R. Martin’s 1982] “Fevre Dream” as a masterpiece among vampire fantasy and had even previously recommended it to all new employees”, he says. Martin is responsible for writing much of the game’s wider mythos. I am still unable to put into words how grateful I am to Mr Martin for agreeing to our offer!

I would have to say the biggest difference [from our previous games] is it being open world. Due to this, the scale of the world and its narrative, as well as the depth and freedom of exploration have increased dramatically. It is without a doubt our biggest title yet in terms of sheer volume. There are many definitions to the term “open world,” and I might not be phrasing it correctly, but we have simply tried our own approach to a game with a large, open field to play in. It is a world full of danger and threats, as well as many areas ripe for exploration. Among those areas, you will also find intricately designed, multi-layered castles and such,” Miyazaki says about Elden Ring, which will also have major boss fights.

Elden Ring is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There is no release date known yet.
