NBA 2K20 Sells Like Hot Cakes Despite The Gambling Scandal

Even though NBA 2K20 had fire around it in the summer due to the MyTeam mode (its trailer showed gambling devices in the game, we wrote about it), as if nothing happened, it managed to sell ridiculously well in September.

NPD Group released its September report about the United States. The total video game sales in the month were worth 1.278 billion dollars, which is an 8% decrease year-on-year. The hardware saw a 22% drop oy to 240 million bucks. Game sales had a small, 4% fall to 732 million USD, and the accessories/game cards category saw a 7% drop to 308 million. What’s the reason behind the COMPLETE drop? The answer is simple: people are waiting for the next console generation, and the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One both have wide install bases. The Nintendo Switch (which we discussed separately how many sales it has in Europe and North America – it also was the best-seller in the US for the tenth month in a row) alone cannot hold back the decrease, even though it strives in sales altogether.

Let’s take a look at the American Top 20 for September. The chart is sorted by dollar sales, not the number of units sold.

  1. NBA 2K20
  2. Borderlands 3
  3. FIFA 20
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening*
  5. Madden NFL 20
  6. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
  7. Gears 5^
  8. Code Vein
  9. NHL 20
  10. Mario Kart 8*
  11. Minecraft#
  12. Grand Theft Auto V
  13. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*
  14. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  15. Red Dead Redemption II
  16. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
  17. Plants vs Zombies: Battle For Neighborville
  18. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  19. Catherine
  20. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*

Take-Two has taken two of the three spots on the roster: NBA 2K20 immediately took the lead of the charts, and Borderlands 3 finished right behind it. EA Sports claimed the 3rd, 5th, and the 9th spots, and FIFA 20 got to the third spot in just a few days. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening’s remake claimed the fourth spot, and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’s sixth place is indeed a disappointment!

NBA 2K20’s results are even more incredible if we look at the best-sellers of 2019 so far:

  1. NBA 2K20
  2. Mortal Kombat 11
  3. Borderlands 3
  4. Madden NFL 20
  5. Kingdom Hearts III
  6. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
  7. Anthem
  8. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*
  9. Resident Evil 2 2019
  10. Grand Theft Auto V

Indeed, the basketball game already left the previous leader Mortal Kombat 11 behind! However, its lead is just temporary, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will probably take over (NPD forecasted it, we wrote about it), and it might even happen already in October!
