Cyberpunk 2077 Got Delayed, Too!

It seems April won’t be that rough, as CD Projekt RED has pushed Cyberpunk 2077′s release day back in the year.

Square Enix launched a chain reaction by delaying both Marvel’s Avengers and Final Fantasy VII Remake, as CD Projekt RED announced that they will need more time. Let’s see what Marcin Iwinski (co-founder of CD Projekt) and Adam Badowski (head of CD Projekt RED) wrote: „We have important news regarding Cyberpunk 2077‘s release date we’d like to share with you today. Cyberpunk 2077 won’t make the April release window and we’re moving the launch date to September 17, 2020.

We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done. Night City is massive—full of stories, content, and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing. We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect. Expect more regular updates on progress as we get closer to the new release date. We’re really looking forward to seeing you in Night City, thank you for your ongoing support!”

CD Projekt RED emphasised that the delay is not because of a next-gen version. That’s not why Cyberpunk 2077’s new release date is so close to the PlayStation 5’s and the Xbox Series X’ launch window: „As of right now, Cyberpunk is heading for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC. Nothing has changed in regard to those plans,” CD Projekt Red’s CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said on a teleconference call following the delay announcement. „We are going with the same plans that we set. [Cyberpunk 2077] was always designed for [PS4 and Xbox One]. We are thinking about the next generation, but for now, we are focused on the current generation. That plan is still valid,” CEO Adam Kiciński added.

We learned what CD Projekt RED’s announced but not revealed other AAA title could be. The Poles told IGN that this mysterious project is the multiplayer portion of Cyberpunk 2077. It got announced in September, and later in 2019, we also discussed how the multiplayer segment will have respectable monetization (microtransactions). However, we have to wait a lot, though: „Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and speaking of a series of events we expect to occur after that date, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.” By series of events, they probably meant that they want to expand the game with free DLC throughout the end of 2020 and probably in the first half of 2021.

So Cyberpunk 2077 is going to launch on September 17 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and probably the Google Stadia will also get the game on day one. The multiplayer could come in 2022… and then, it might be suspected to be on the next-gen consoles (along with the single-player part), as the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One will both be nine years old by then.
