The Witcher: How Much Involvement Did The Books’ Writer Have?

MOVIE NEWS – Andrzej Sapkowski didn’t mess around: he answered several questions quite openly, not holding himself back.

You can read the interview with the Polish writer on io9, but we’re taking a few snippets of what he said. He was the guy whose work was used for CD Projekt RED‘s The Witcher-trilogy, as well as the Netflix series. He also got a new agreement with CD Projekt RED after taking a lump sum upfront over a decade ago (meaning he’ll get more profit out of Geralt’s story’s game adaptation).

How much was he involved in the Netflix series? „Not very much, on my own request. I do not like working too hard or too long. By the way, I do not like working at all. ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone at me.’ John 8:7,” Sapkowski said. He also went into how much control he had over the adaptation: „For the record: I strongly believe in the freedom of an artist and his artistic expression. I do not interfere and do not impose my views on other artists. I do not insist on anything and do not fight for anything. I advise. When necessary. And asked for.”

His reaction when about half a million Witcher books getting reprinted in the United States is not worse either: „How do you expect I answer this question? That I despaired? Shed tears? Considered suicide? No sir. My feelings were rather obvious and not excessively complex.” But his comment about the series’ future is simply amazing: „Allow me to quote Joe Abercrombie, the author whose books are very much to my liking: ‘Life is, basically, f__ing s__t. Best to keep your expectations low. Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.’”

Andrzej Sapkowski didn’t go into details about the Netflix agreement, but he likely went with a percentage deal. „This specific offer was businesslike and the people behind it sympathetic. I had every reason to react positively,” he said. The Witcher is going to get a second season, with a possible 2021 debut, and there’s also an anime film, Nightmare of the Wolf, in progress, too.

Sapkowski is not an easy figure, but he sticks by his views. He might be a little blunt, but what can you do with an artist?
