A Free Game For The Chinese People: What A Way To Use Marketing Amidst Coronavirus Fears [VIDEO]

Kagami Works‘ marketing head should get a pay raise, as we never expected such a PR move in the middle of an international emergency…

The coronavirus has more than 14 thousand people infected, with more than 300 dead. Unfortunately, we have confirmation of the first death outside China due to the 2019-nCoV: a 44-year-old man’s immune system has been defeated by the virus in the Philippines. A game developer, Kagami Works, thought they will use a different approach.

The studio decided to give away 70 thousand copies to the Chinese players of their game Mirror to stay home and not be in the crowd with other people. Mirror is a…, somewhat lewd match-three game, something like Bejeweled. We’d rather not go into further details or we might have to use an age-gate, and we can’t seem to find one in the shed. The video speaks for itself…

„The year has just started and we’re all facing challenging situations. To avoid nCov, it’s better to stay at home. So we decide to give away 70,000 copies of Mirror to keep you company. Please accept our gift and stay strong! I’m sure you’ve read this before but we’re still going to emphasize this again: Please avoid going out, if you must, please keep your mask on at all time. Please avoid getting physical contact with other people and stay away from the crowd. Please wash your hands as many times as you can. Again, we sincerely hope you have a pleasant and secure holiday,” their announcement says on Steam. The Chinese players should click here, give their telephone number, and follow the instructions to get the Steam code – the offer is active until February 10. What a way to promote the game!

Unfortunately, the gaming industry slides further into the issues caused by the coronavirus. The other day, we wrote about how the Taipei Game Show got delayed. We would have heard of Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring there…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
