Gothic Remake Will Happen!

THQ Nordic will make a new version of out of Gothic, which is surprising, as Gothic Playable Teaser, a pre-alpha concept that launched on Steam two months ago, didn’t seem to be that huge…

Still, the December 13-launched Gothic Playable Teaser was meant to gauge interest whether Piranha Bytes’ 2001 game should get a brand new version or not. The answer seems to be yes, as THQ Nordic announced that the new, Barcelona studio will work on the Gothic remake. It is in development for „next-gen consoles” and PC. (So they immediately plan a multiplatform release? PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC?) And while we don’t know when it will launch, THQ Nordic has immediately ruled 2020 out as a launch window.

Over 180 thousand people have played Gothic Playable Teaser, and 94.8% of the players that have filled the survey were in favour of the remake. THQ Nordic has assessed over 43 thousand answered surveys, as well as over 9 thousand Steam reviews, plus some social media comments. (So if you said on Twitter that the teaser was terrible, they might have seen it.) Still, the analysed data was compiled into a PDF, which you can find here.

After the Barcelona studio has been established, THQ Nordic will assess what players liked and what they should change after the playable teaser. One of the most common requests was for a „grittier and less colourful world.” „We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high-quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics,” THQ Nordic business and product development director Reinhard Pollice said in a press release.

So Gothic is getting a next-gen version, which is probably going to launch in 2022 – 2021 feels rushed.
