PlayStation VR 2: The First Details Of Its New Display?

Even though Sony still doesn’t talk about how there will be a new PlayStation VR model, it’s not a question if it exists but when it will be revealed to the public…

JDI’s website is suspicious. It shows a press release about mass-producing a new, high-definition, 1058 PPI VR LCD display. Sony has shares in JDI (Japan Display Inc.), so they have direct access to the company’s product, which could thus be used for the next PlayStation VR. The PSVR that even Bloomberg has mentioned last week…

The size of the IPS LCD display is 2.1″ (a little over 5.2 cm). Its resolution is 1600×1600, and it has a 120 Hz frequency, meaning its maximum frame rate could be 120 frames per second. The pixel density is 1058 PPI (pixels per inch). The reaction time is 4.5 ms at worst, and its brightness is 430 cd/m^2. It sounds Greek at first glance, so let’s compare it to the current PlayStation VR model. It has a 5.7″ OLED display (for both eyes, mind you), with a 1080p resolution, and 386 PPI pixel density. The Oculus Rift S also has a single display, with a 1280×1440 resolution per eye, and a 538 PPI pixel density.

JDI’s new product can be safely said to be a massive improvement in many aspects (resolution, frame rate, and possibly the quality of the display as well) in comparison to the currently available, market-leading PlayStation VR. As the mass production has just started (the press release is dated February 17), several months will be needed before Sony could even announce one of its worst-kept secrets.

Bloomberg says the new PlayStation VR will arrive shortly after the PlayStation 5, whose schedule is said to be set in stone by now. The console is out this holiday season, and the new PSVR could arrive in 2021.
