Okami 2: It Was Planned, But It Got Cancelled

Okami 2, the adventures of the white fox could have continued, but it is not going to happen.

Hideki Kamiya often gets the question of whether Okami could continue or not. As previously he was the director of the game at Capcom‘s Clover studio, the fans keep asking him as the only possible person to ask. However, he can’t say much about it: the IP is owned by Capcom, and he’s been a founding member of PlatinumGames more than thirteen years ago.

In 2018, Liam Robertson, a video game historian and insider, released a video that detailed how Tatsuya Minami, a founder and then president of PlatinumGames, was forced to depart. He says Capcom was trying to fix the relationship with them (as PlatinumGames was formed out of ex-Capcom members), and they were considering Okami 2 to be a reality, but Minami’s departure meant the project got scrapped even before it got started, as he was the main link between Capcom and PlatinumGames.

AestheticGamer’s two cents can be read on Twitter: „Here comes the gut punch. Okami 2 was in development a few years ago, but it was scrapped & probably will never happen because of a soured relationship between certain parties. There was some drama & burned bridges, so it’s probably buried and dead unless something changes there. This was a few years ago, but let’s just say Platinum probably never want to work on it again after what went down. I’m sorry to beat around the bush about it, but after some things that happened they probably never want to touch it again.” Ouch.

So don’t dream about Okami 2. It would only happen if something significant changes at PlatinumGames, or if Capcom does it itself. (And Minami has been rumoured to go back there, which didn’t improve things.) But without Kamiya’s involvement, it wouldn’t be a true sequel.
