Xbox Game Studios: 16 Studios – Who Is The Newcomer? [VIDEO]

Microsoft was serious about expanding its first-party studios, but who could be the new team that they figuratively put their hands on?

Microsoft has broadcasted the interviews and talks that were supposed to be for the postponed Game Developers Conference (GDC). You can see the 4+ hour-long video embedded below. However, Kevin Gammill, Microsoft’s general manager of game developer experiences (can you even say that with a single breath?) said the following around the 25-minute mark: „What’s unique about gaming at Microsoft is that we build the tools for game developer and then we use them across our 16 first-party studios to create games. We recognize game development is about pushing technology to its absolute limits.” 16. Not 15. That was the official figure until now. 343 Industries, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, InXile Entertainment, Mojang, Ninja Theory, Obsidian Entertainment, Playground Games, Rare, The Coalition, The Initiative, Turn 10, Undead Labs, World’s Edge, and Xbox Global Publishing, but who knows if this last team is making games or not. It’s still at least fourteen studios.

Who could be the rookie? Previously, we wrote about how Microsoft wants to spread its presence in Asia, but there are rumours of them sniffing around Polish studios. Techland? Unlikely, they act as a publisher themselves – too big of a fish. The Farm 51? (Get Even, World War 3, Chernobylite…) Seems realistic. People Can Fry? Bold, but this team was previously helping Epic Games in developing the X360 Gears of War games. CD Projekt RED? Now that is too big of a fish even for Microsoft to fry. Asobo Studio? Seems plausible: they are now working together on Microsoft Flight Simulator.

So it’s either The Farm 51, People Can Fly, or Asobo Studio if they went for a Polish team. Or, they set up a new studio from scratch. (It happened before with The Initiative!)
