PlayStation VR 2: Will It Reduce Motion Sickness?

Sony’s new patent looks exciting.

Let’s see the definition of this patent: „A VR sickness reduction system, a head-mounted display, a VR sickness reduction method, and a program with which it is possible to further reduce VR sickness. An HMD (12) is provided with a display unit (38), which is disposed in front of the eyes of a user when the user wears the HMD (12). A shaking unit (42) can shake the head of the user wearing the HMD (12).

An entertainment device (14) causes the display unit (38) to display a moving image representing a view as seen from a viewpoint. The entertainment device (14) controls the shaking of the shaking unit (42) by the acceleration condition of the viewpoint for the moving image displayed by the display unit (38).”

In layman’s terms, Sony might include some extra parts that could help those who quickly get motion sick after (or during) PlayStation VR-usage. Then again, keep in mind that not every patent gets used in the final, retail product, and the PlayStation VR 2 (or whatever its name will be) will be no exception.

There’s also an abstract that explains how the new PlayStation VR could offer full-body tracking (see second image below): „Provided are a tracker calibration device, tracker calibration method, and program that make it possible to precisely calibrate a plurality of types of trackers without measuring the relative positions of the trackers beforehand. A tracker data acquisition unit (50) acquires a plurality of items of first tracker data indicating the position of a first tracker expressed using a first coordinate system.

The tracker data acquisition unit (50) acquires a plurality of items of second tracker data indicating the position and orientation of a second tracker expressed using a second coordinate system. Based on the plurality of items of first tracker data and the plurality of items of second tracker data, a parameter estimation unit (58) estimates parameter values for converting the positions expressed using the second coordinate system into expressions in the first coordinate system and estimates the relative position of the second tracker concerning the position of the first tracker.”

It could be questioned if Sony will indeed use this tech, and also, the new PlayStation VR isn’t even announced yet! (Sony only said the PlayStation 5 will not ignore VR.) It will have a lot of challenges to face, and since the original model has become the best-selling VR headset, the company has to do something to keep up the pace. The new headset could launch in 2021 due to the coronavirus.

Hopefully, Sony will announce the new PlayStation VR this summer.
