Sony Interactive Entertainment’s new patent might be hinting at another new, currently unannounced function of the PlayStation 5, which has a few aces up its sleeve at the moment.
According to the patent, the PlayStation 5 might be using dynamic music taken to the next level. Let’s see the patent’s key text: „A method and system for dynamic music creation are disclosed. An emotion is assigned to one or more musical motifs and a game vector is associated with the emotion. The one or more musical motifs are mapped to the game vector based on the emotion. Musical composition is generated based on the game vector and desired emotions.” Since the current dynamic music changes based on the events in the game, there is no human factor in that.
Now, we have to ask the obligatory question: how will the PlayStation 5 recognise what we feel at the moment of playing the game? Austin Wintory and Mike Bithell might have hinted at the possible answer – the former is a renown industry composer, while the latter has made John Wick Hex -, and they said that the DualSense, the next-gen PlayStation controller that will not be called DualShock 5, will help the developers to create unique possibilities with music in the PlayStation 5 games.
However, a patent doesn’t always mean its contents will be utilised in the retail console. Thus, the question mark in the title is intentional. The PlayStation 5 might be seen on June 4, but its games will be seen in a couple of days, no matter what happens. We can be a bit more patient.
The console (together with the Xbox Series X) is planned to arrive this Holiday season. Their respective launch day and pricing is yet to be announced.
