Do Not Feed The Monkeys: Nudity, Sexual Content… And The Wrong Age Rating!

Initially, the game had the worst possible age rating on the Nintendo Switch.

GoNintendo reports that at first, an indie game was available on the Nintendo Switch’ US eShop with the lowest possible age rating (E for Everyone), even though it has adult content (such as nudity and sexual references). Do Not Feed The Monkeys is meant to be a comical surveillance title.

The joke here is that Alawar, the game’s dev team, openly warns in the description that it may not be appropriate for younger players or for viewing at work because of „nudity or sexual content, [and] general mature content.” You can see nudity in just a couple of minutes in the free demo, albeit in a censored, pixelated format.

Thus, Do Not Feed The Monkeys was pulled from every platform, and Alawar wrote the following on Twitter: „As some of you may know, we intended to release Do Not Feed The Monkeys on Switch today. Unfortunately, we had to change the ratings. We are waiting for the rating update to be tested, and we’ll be able to release the game after that. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

Fairly quickly, a patch was added, with updated rating certificates has been released – the game will now be rated Mature 17+ by ESRB (America) and 12+ by PEGI (Europe). „We would not point fighters at anyone in this situation… things just happen sometimes. The most important thing is we’ve fixed it and are very grateful for all the support fro the Nintendo team and rating agencies managers,” Alawar told Gamesindustry. Fighters? They meant fingers…

Still, it is quite weird to see a game that is recommended for older audiences to get such a low age rating without any issue. At least the story has a happy ending.
