Let’s hope that the result will not be as terrible as Jurassic Park: Trespasser (too ambitious, badly executed…).
Jurassic Life started as a mod of Half-Life 2, set on Isla Nublar, which doesn’t need to be explained to the fans of Jurassic Park. So far, so good, but the developers’ statement claims that Jurassic Life is about to stop being a mod to become a standalone title. „You won’t need Half-Life 2 at all for the game to work. We wish to let you know that Jurassic Life now only requires Source SDK 2013, which is free and obtainable on Steam,” the devs say on ModDB.
The video below uses the VHS aesthetic fairly well, and it introduces the weapons, the animals (the dinosaurs), and the voice actors, who try to imitate the cast of Jurassic Park. However, Jurassic Life also takes ideas from the book for the locations. In Jurassic Life, you control a park ranger called Robert Muldoon, who can defend himself with a cattle prod or tranquillity darts. That probably won’t help as much against a T-Rex, though, unless the devs have some unannounced ideas up their sleeves for other weapons, too.
According to the plans, Jurassic Life is set to launch as a standalone title this year. „This is a non-profit fan-game that is not intended for commercial use,” their disclaimer says. It’s a good way to protect themselves from a group of lawyers: if your project does not gain anything monetarily, you do not cause any financial harm. This is why they hope that Universal won’t pull the classic cease and desist order. (Which, in other words, means that they’d immediately have to stop developing Jurassic Life, or they would be sued to Hell and back by their lawyers.)
