PlayStation 5: More Backwards Compatibility Than We Thought?

The PlayStation 5 might be on the same level as the Xbox Series X (with one generation at least…) with the new rumours.

Until now, we believed that the PlayStation 5 will only support selected, or Sony-tested PlayStation 4 titles without any issue. However, now Lance McDonald (who you might know for his findings in P.T.) wrote the following on Twitter: „There’s been some confusion about this in the past and I can clear it up now. The PlayStation 5 can run all PlayStation 4 games without per-game whitelisting. Sony continues to test titles but the system will not prevent you from launching untested games.”

This isn’t official, but it is fairly logical: the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 both use AMD-based CPUs and GPUs (the former is on the same architecture in both generations: x86), meaning there would be no need to reprogram the games to run properly on the newer hardware – so they could likely run their PlayStation 4 title on the PlayStation 5 fairly easily.

On Twitter, we also saw images of the DualSense… or at least one of its unofficial black variant! Unfortunately, the images have no source, so we can’t take them entirely seriously. However, if these are not fake, then we’ll have a single question towards Sony: why do the buttons have to be white?

Whatever colours the DualSense will get, we will have to update the controller. By that, we don’t mean you have to regularly clean it or get a new one after some usage. No, instead, you will have to update it! The DualSense website has a blurb that says you should always update the firmware of both the PlayStation 5… and the controller. Wow.

The PlayStation 5 (PlayStation 5 Standard Edition + PlayStation 5 Digital Edition without a UHD Blu-ray drive), as well as the DualSense, will launch this Holiday season for God knows how much.
